Group of Hawaiian men and a Tahuna trying to catch a manō (Shark) in deep waters.
The Hawaiian name for man-eating sharks (such as the tiger and great white shark) is Niuhi. In old Hawaiʻi, catching the niuhi was the game of the chiefs. Which turned into a dangerous sport for which special techniques were developed. Eating niuhi flesh was tapu (forbidden) to women.
- This is what my ancestors did, and I’m proud of it.
